July 15, 2026 — Smoke from wildfires burning in Ontario, Canada has triggered Air Quality Health Advisories all across New York State. The impact of thick smoke and particulates are expected to cover New York State for several days.
New York is cautioning all regions of New York State to stay safe while outdoors, though Western and Central New York are expected to see the greatest impact. According to the Department of Environmental Conservation, the Air Quality Index (AQI) has reached above 100, with some areas of New York reaching over 150. Combined with an ongoing heat wave, the fine particulate matter in the air is creating a two-front health hazard for members working outdoors or in poorly ventilated spaces.
PEF members are advised to take the following measures to protect yourself:
- Check real-time AQI before working outdoors or during breaks at airnow.gov
- Check NYS air quality forecasts & guidance at dec.ny.gov/environmental-protection/air-quality/air-quality-index-forecast-current-observations
- Limit strenuous outdoor activity, especially if you have asthma, heart or lung conditions, or are otherwise sensitive.
- If ground-level smoke is visible or you can smell it, move indoors or into filtered air when possible
- Stay hydrated — heat and smoke exposure compounds risk of injury.
