The following statement was issued by PEF President Wayne Spence on Nov. 7, 2025:
“Our deepest condolences go out to the family, friends, and colleagues of the PEF member who tragically took his own life at Marcy Correctional Facility this morning. We have been in contact with DOCCS and the PEF members who work at Marcy. This is the fourth suicide of a PEF member who works at DOCCS in the past two years. It is a painful reminder of the extreme stress faced by those who work behind the walls. We urge the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision to immediately examine and strengthen mental health and support services for staff. The well-being of the people who keep correctional facilities running must be a priority.”
