{"id":9554,"date":"2024-03-12T16:31:05","date_gmt":"2024-03-12T20:31:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pef.org\/?p=9554"},"modified":"2024-03-12T16:31:05","modified_gmt":"2024-03-12T20:31:05","slug":"pef-statement-on-nys-senate-budget-proposal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pef.org\/articles\/news\/pef-statement-on-nys-senate-budget-proposal\/","title":{"rendered":"PEF statement on NYS Senate budget proposal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>PEF President Wayne Spence issued the following statement following the State Senate&#8217;s release of their one-house budget proposal on March 12, 2024:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnder the leadership of Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, the New York State Senate Majority\u2019s budget proposal greatly improves upon the Executive Budget proposal submitted in January.\u00a0 The New York State Senate Majority provides the support necessary to ensure that the critical services provided by SUNY Downstate Medical Center remain available to the residents of Central Brooklyn while also establishing a working group of stakeholders to develop a sustainability plan for continued long-term operation of the facility\u00a0as a state-owned and operated entity. \u00a0The Senate also advances responsible and affordable improvements to the Tier 6 pension plan designed to increase public sector hiring and retention and reduce the more than $1 billion the state currently spends on overtime compensation due to low staffing.\u00a0 In addition to those top two PEF priorities, the Senate\u2019s proposal includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A recurring revenue stream for the Department of Labor to enforce violations in order to protect workers and businesses that abide by the state\u2019s labor laws;<\/li>\n<li>Expansion of the Governor\u2019s work to improve mental health services by providing a new student loan forgiveness program for mental health professionals;<\/li>\n<li>A more transparent and fairer approach to right-sizing the state\u2019s correctional facilities;<\/li>\n<li>Protection of patients by rejecting the Interstate Nurse Licensure Compact ,which would lower standards for out-of-state nurses working in New York;<\/li>\n<li>Significant steps to regulate the use of artificial intelligence in state agencies in order to protect against implicit biases and to protect the data of New Yorkers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>PEF looks forward to working with the Governor and the Senate to enact these sensible proposals into law.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PEF President Wayne Spence issued the following statement following the State Senate&#8217;s release of their one-house budget proposal on March 12, 2024: \u201cUnder the leadership of Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins,&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":9555,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[6,479],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-9554","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","category-press-releases"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v27.1 (Yoast SEO v27.1.1) -
