The PEF Jewish Committee Shavuot Celebration – Region 10
Date(s) - 06/25/2014
5:30 pm - 7:30 pm
Region 10 - NYC
The PEF Jewish Committee cordially invites YOU to our Post-Shavuot Celebration.
The holiday of Shavuot commemorates the day that G-D gave the Torah to the Jewish people on Mount Sinai; a far-reaching spiritual event that touched the essence of the Jewish soul for all times. Our sages have compared it to a wedding between G‑D and the Jewish people; each year on Shavuot we renew our acceptance of G‑D’s gift as G‑D “re-gives” the Torah. Shavuot is also referred to as the “Festival of Weeks”; it takes place 7 weeks after the second day of Passover. Some communities read the Book of Ruth publicly, as King David (whose passing occurred on Shavuot) was a descendant of Ruth the Moabite.
Did you know it’s customary to eat dairy foods on Shavuot? Some say this is because upon receiving the Torah (including its kosher dietary laws), the Jewish people could not cook meat in their pots which had yet to be rendered kosher.
Please join the men and women of the PEF Jewish Committee for a nosh and an evening of learning everything you always wanted to know about Shavuot, but were afraid to ask.
All PEF members and their guests are welcome to attend – can you join us?
