Labor Day is being celebrated Monday, September 5. PEF members across the state are invited to parades and picnics, many in conjunction with other labor organizations as a sign of solidarity. It is a day for all union members to unite and celebrate the advances earned by the forefathers of the labor movement, and to prepare for the challenges we face today and in the future.
Here are some of the events:
Albany – A Labor Day picnic and celebration will be held at Cook Park in the village of Colonie from noon to 5 p.m. on Monday, September 5. It is being hosted by the Solidarity Committee of the Capital District. The event is free and open to all. Picnic food will be provided but members are asked to also bring a potluck dish. The event will include an awards ceremony, music and a silent auction of union memorabilia.
PEF Region 8 members and their families are also invited to participate in the annual Labor Day parade Friday, September 9th. The parade will assemble at Academy Park in Albany at 5:30 p.m. and participants will march to the Corning Preserve. For more information call Andrea Coton at 800-342-4306 ext.215.
Brooklyn – The annual West Indian/American Day Parade is held on the holiday. Members should arrive at 9 a.m. at Eastern Parkway, midway between Schenectady and Utica Avenues. Buffalo – A parade and picnic will be held September 5. Members should gather at the corner of Abbott and Stevenson at 11 a.m. for a 12 noon parade, followed by a picnic in Cazenovia Park. For more information call PEF Region 1 Coordinator Rocco Brindisi at 716-853-3100.
Ithaca – A Labor Day picnic and awards ceremony will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Stewart Park on September 5th. This event is sponsored by the Midstate Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO and Tompkins County Workers’ Center. Call 607-372-3153 for more details.
Manhattan – PEF members in Regions 9 through 12 are invited to join PEF’s elected leaders in a parade on Saturday, September 10th. Participants should arrive before 12:15 p.m. at West 47th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues. The PEF van will be there with refreshments and T-shirts. Massena – PEF Region 7 members will celebrate the holiday on September 5th with a parade followed by a picnic in the park. The parade kicks off at 11 a.m. members should arrive by 9:30 a.m. to register at 32 Willow Street in the vacant lot across from the Rusty Wheel Tavern.
Syracuse – The Greater Syracuse Labor Council will hold a parade on September 5th at the state Fair. Members should meet at 10 a.m. at Gate 4 by the Iroquois Indian Village. The parade starts at 10:30 and a rally will be held after. For more information call Dave Scalisi at 315-345-8425.
All PEF offices will be closed Monday, September 5 in observance of the holiday and will reopen Tuesday, September 6th. PEF leaders and staff wish all members and their families a safe and enjoyable holiday, while remembering the importance of the labor movement.
