This year, Labor Day is being celebrated Monday, September 7. Union leaders across the state are planning picnics and parades for PEF members, many in conjunction with other labor organizations. It is a day for all union members to unite and celebrate the advances earned by the forefathers of the labor movement, and to prepare for the challenges of the future.
The annual Michael L. Burns Capital District Labor Parade in Albany will be held Friday, September 11 at 6 p.m. The parade begins at Albany City Hall and ends at the Corning Preserve. A parade and picnic will take place in Buffalo on Monday, September 7. Members are asked to gather at the corner of Abbott and Stevenson at 11 a.m. for a 12 noon parade, followed by a picnic in Cazenovia Park. Contact John Mudie at 716-633-2211 for more information.
In Ithaca, New York will celebrate Labor Day on September 7 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Stewart Park with a picnic featuring food, raffles and an awards ceremony. This event is sponsored by the Mid-State Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO and Tompkins County Workers’ Center. Call 607-372-3153 for more details.
PEF Members in Regions 9, 10, 11 and 12 are invited to participate in a parade on Saturday, September 12 beginning at 10 a.m. in Manhattan. The starting point for the parade is at East 45th Street between 5th Avenue and Vanderbilt Avenue. For more information call 212-227-3132.
And, union members in PEF Region 7 will celebrate the holiday on September 7 with a parade in Massena, followed by a picnic in Springs Park. The parade begins at 10 a.m. If you would like to participate, please arrive by 9 a.m. to register at 32 Willow Street in the vacant lot across from the Rusty Wheel Tavern. In Rochester PEF members will assembly at Pitkin Street North at East Main on Monday, September 7 at 10 a.m. Family and friends are welcome. Contact: Joyce Ford, with the number attending. Parade route is over one mile long. For short distance walkers a ride is provided or you can use your own car.
All PEF offices will be closed Monday, September 7 in observance of the Labor Day holiday. Offices will re-open Tuesday, September 8. PEF leaders and staff wish all members and their families a safe and enjoyable holiday, while remembering the importance of the labor movement.
