One in eight older adults is currently living estranged from or abandonded by one or more of their adult children. Clinicians at any level of experience need to be equipped to assess for and treat the impacts of this traumatizing life event.
This virtual workshop, from 9 a.m. to noon on Jan. 27, 2023, will explore how current myths, misunderstandings, and cultural constructs can impact how a clinician approaches this population. Without this understanding, therapists can do further harm to the mental health of those who are suffering through this situation.
At a time in life when the physical, financial, social, mental and spiritual well-being of older adults can be compromised by advancing age, estrangement is an additional impact to an already compromised health system, not to mention the impact on the entire family when an estrangement occurs.
