Cuomo, Gillibrand top list of hundreds of candidates endorsed by PEF E Board
By SHERRY HALBROOK
The PEF Executive Board reviewed and voted in August on endorsements of political candidates for nearly 250 state and federal offices. The recommendations came from the PEF Political Action Committee, which made them after reviewing the recommendations of the union’s 12 regional PACs that spent many long hours meeting with candidates and examining their voting records and positions on issues important to PEF members.
Among the top endorsements approved by the board were Andrew Cuomo for re-election as NYS governor, Kirsten Gillibrand for re-election to the U.S. Senate, and Thomas DiNapoli for re-election to the post of NYS comptroller.
The board members expressed their approval and gratitude to Cuomo for his leadership in getting state legislation enacted this year to help unions such as PEF continue to represent public employees in the face of massive attacks in the courts and on the ground from extremely wealthy individuals and corporate interests that want to destroy the power of ordinary working Americans once and for all.
The board took its PAC’s advice and held off on endorsing anyone yet for state attorney general, but the union might revisit this question after the September 13 party primary elections. A number of other state legislative seats and one seat in Congress were also set aside with no endorsements made at the August board meeting. They, too, might be taken up after the primary.
PEF President Wayne Spence expressed his gratitude to the many PEF members who serve on the union’s PACs at all levels for their diligence and hard work in formulating the endorsement recommendations that were submitted to the board, and for the leadership they will provide in building member support for the endorsed candidates.
