Get safe staffing passed into law this year!
It’s time to register for nurse conference, lobby day
By DEBORAH A. MILES
The PEF Nurses Committee has a new plan of action to give all PEF nurses an opportunity to tell their stories to their elected officials, to persuade each and every one on the dual importance of safe staffing levels and quality patient care.
As a prelude to the lobby day, PEF nurses are invited to participate in a health and safety conference that will feature workshops led by specialists from the state Department of Labor, PEF’s Legislative Department and PEF’s Occupational Health and Safety Department on Monday, April 29. It will be held at PEF’s headquarters building in Latham. Those who participate in the full day and complete an evaluation will earn 4.0 CEUs (continuing education units).

PEF Nurse Coordinator Dee Dodson said the following day, April 30, nurses will speak to their legislators in Albany wearing the colors of PEF in their T-shirts and berets.
“We are proud of our union and we want to stand out,” Dodson said. “Having our own lobby day will ensure that all our elected officials will learn from their constituents. I know our nurses have compelling stories to tell, so legislators will hear and absorb what we have to say.”
Dodson said if you plan on attending both the conference and lobby day, PEF will pay for the hotel expenses for the first 50 people who register, who live more than 25 miles from Albany. The rooms are double occupancy, or you can pay half the cost of a room for $66 for a single. All room reservations must have a $50 check submitted, which is refundable upon sign-in. Single roomers should send a separate check for $66.
To be cost-effective, people are being asked to drive their personal vehicles. If five to six people wish to carpool, PEF will rent a mini-van, but a member of the group will have to drive. The union will also reimburse members on Amtrak expenses.
The deadline to register for one or both events is April 19. Registration forms will be distributed to nurses and health care workers through a PEF email blast, or you can register online at http://bit.ly/pefnurses2019.
