With the approach of spring come new events and activities. These include our PEF Retirees Biennial Leadership Conference that will be held April 24 at the Woodcliff Hotel and Conference Center in Rochester.
The theme for this year’s conference is “Mobilizing for Senior Power.” Invited guests include Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul, state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli, U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, and state Sen. Joe Robach. Always a very well received event, the conference this year will again provide attendees from all over the state an opportunity to meet and exchange views, ideas and opinions.
Another event that will be coming shortly is a decision in the U.S. Supreme Court case Janus v. AFSCME. This case is being funded and pushed by wealthy corporations and right-wing politicians who ultimately want to eliminate workers’ freedom to come together in unions to create a better life. The case challenges the right of unions to charge fees for services to workers who are represented by a union but who refuse to join it. If the challenge succeeds, its supporters would use it to lure union members to withhold their dues and expect free services.
As retirees we need to support our union brothers and sisters by helping to organize around a Janus fight-back effort. We must help educate members about the dangers and consequences of a Supreme Court Decision in favor of Janus. The goal of Janus is to cripple labor unions, weaken workers rights and further exacerbate the imbalance of power in economic, political, and social systems.
I agree with PEF President Wayne Spence whose message in the February issue of The Communicator was “Let’s stand together against Janus.”
On a different note, the Judi Scanlon Memorial Golf Tournament will be held June 15 in at the Batavia County Club. A scholarship is funded through this tournament as a way to honor the memory of PEF member Judi Scanlon at the state Office of Mental Health who was murdered by a client during a home visit in November 1998. Each year scholarship winners are selected randomly to receive $1,000. Applicants must be the child of a PEF member and be pursuing a degree in a health-related field.
The tournament is sponsored by PEF Region 1 and Region 1 PEF Retirees. Judy Scanlon touched the hearts of PEF members, especially in Region 1, and the tournament and scholarship are a tribute to her!
