PEF Staying Strong in 2019

Wayne-Spencenew2018By WAYNE SPENCE

Looking forward to 2019, we have several goals. The first of which is to secure a great contract we can be proud to present to our members for ratification. Negotiations have already begun and a strong and united membership will give our contract team added strength at the bargaining table. If you can, try to attend a contract team meeting in your region or take part in a teleconference where contract team members are on hand to answer  your questions. A schedule of contract team meetings is listed in the new Communicator Newsletter and you can check the PEF website and/or PEF official social media pages for the most up-to-date list of meetings and teleconferences.

We will continue strategic and responsible budgeting in 2019, as ethical stewardship of  your dues makes it possible for PEF to fight against privatization, civil service erosion and other threats and advance good government solutions that benefit all New Yorkers.

We will continue our fight against civil service erosion in 2019 with additional and highly knowledgeable PEF staff, and we will continue our robust Member Engagement efforts to combat the anti-union forces that continue their attacks on PEF and other public employee unions.

Together, we achieved many successes in 2018, including legislative victories like the passage of the Cost Benefit Analysis bill in both houses of the legislature; restoring $78.6 million to SUNY hospitals; adding language to the state budget to protect public employee unions and having all budget proposals we worked to defeat removed from the final state budget. We also saw a decision to keep the Western New York Children’s Psychiatric Center at its West Seneca location – a great example of what can be accomplished when we work with coalition partners including other unions, clergy and community groups to do what we know is right.

Our new leadership team, sworn into office August 1, 2018, immediately went to work to ensure that PEF financial and information systems are transparent, accountable, ethical, efficient and cost-effective.  We’ve already put into place financial management improvements, new and improved financial policies and resources for PEF divisions, clear financial guidance for PEF committees and new structural improvements in both finance and information systems.

cardhandThanks to your continued commitment to PEF, we have proven the strength of our membership and have shown the anti-union groups that we are indeed Union Strong!

We Are Winning The Future Together!

Membership cards are ALWAYS available online at https://apps.pef.org/join-pef.html, or you can request one through your steward, council leader or regional coordinator.
