Standing united is key to PEF’s future
Reflecting on our victories, recognizing our challenges

By Wayne Spence
As we celebrate this holiday season, I want to wish all members and their families a joyous time. This is a special time of year for many reasons. We keep traditions, create new memories and reflect on the past year.

The strength of the PEF membership and how so many of you proved what we can accomplish when we work together is most impressive.

I am truly humbled and proud to be president of this union, when I see, day after day, how members address workplace issues and injustices, and take an active role to find solutions.

I am also grateful to be working with a new team of elected leaders who, within a few months, have already demonstrated their outstanding commitment to not only maintain PEF as one of New York’s top labor unions, but to enhance PEF’s stability during changing times.

PEF Contract Town Hall Meetings: Real Professionals, Real Respect, Real Voice

Your PS&T Contract Team needs to hear from you now

Members of the union’s PS&T Contract Team are fanning out across the state to visit every PEF region.

With contract talks set to begin with a meeting in late January to discuss the ground rules for negotiations, the team members are moving quickly to hold meetings with members in each region at least once. The majority of these meetings are scheduled for January through mid-February.

PEF Region 6 members were treated December 12 to the first of these meetings. They spoke to team members about how the current PS&T contract, which expires April 1, is working for them, and their needs for improvements in the next pact. The meeting, held in New Hartford near Utica, was very well attended.

Four members of the contract team participated: Region 3 Coordinator Colleen Williams, Region 4 Coordinator Bobbi Stafford, and Executive Board members Amy DeMarco and Vicky Stockton. READ MORECONTRACT SCHEDULE

ALERT – Anti-union elf canvassers reported in PEF regions!

PEF Members and Leaders, earlier this month, New Choice NY (NCNY), one of the anti-union forces here in NYS, began a door knocking canvass in Region 8 targeting union households.

The same organization then switched tactics and began to flyer PEF and CSEA members at the Empire State Plaza. Their efforts were unsuccessful!  Many PEF members took to social media to voice their feelings about the paid, out-of-state canvassers, who were aggressive in their harassment of our members.

In response, PEF leaders and members, along with PEF Field Service Organizing staff, handed out pro-union literature over the next two days and were welcomed and appreciated by the members they spoke to about the value of being a PEF member.. READ MORE

PEF, AFT enrich lives of children through First Book

On an unusually mild and sunny mid-December Saturday, the spirit of holiday giving transformed one room at Greene Correctional Facility in Coxsackie into a festive library.

Tables were adorned with fresh Balsam Fir arrangements made by the inmates who study horticulture, and books for all ages were neatly displayed, along with coloring books, crayons, dictionaries and some snacks.

Family members arrived to visit their incarcerated dad, husband or brother, and none of the visitors with children expected a wonderful surprise from PEF and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) who partnered with an organization called First Book. READ MORE
