Thayer, former PEF VP, dead at 84
PEF is saddened to announce the death of a former vice president of the union, Calvin Thayer.
Thayer died November 30, 2018, at his home in Halfmoon (Saratoga County). He was 84.
A vice president of PEF from August 1991 through July 1994, Thayer was also a longtime member of the PEF Executive Board. He represented members of PEF Division 258 at the state Transportation Department on the Executive Board from 1983 until election as a PEF vice president in 1991.
Thayer began working for the state DOT in 1960 and retired 35 years later in August 1994. He then served on the Executive Board as the representative of PEF retirees from 1994 until the fall of 2005.
He also had been a PEF member of the joint labor-management committee at DOT and a member of the PEF Region 8 Political Action Committee. He was also a steward and assistant council leader of Division 258 in the 1980s.
In 1990, Thayer was named Statewide Engineer of the Year by his peers for his distinguished state career and his community service, which included years as a member of the Town of Halfmoon Planning Board.
Thayer was a U.S. Army veteran and was active in VFW Post 1498, as well as the PEF Veterans Committee. — Sherry Halbrook
