PEF launches ‘Do The Write Thing” campaign

PEF members are being asked to help promote the services they provide by writing to local newspapers, e-mailing political blogs and calling talk shows. If you need help with a letter, or just want to have the facts checked, send your thoughts to dmiles@pef.org. PEF will help you with your efforts and also send you a pen with the message inscribed, ‘I did the “write” thing.”

Black and Puerto Rican Legislative Conference slated for February 12-14

The 39th Annual Black and Puerto Rican Legislative Conference will be held Friday, February 12 through Sunday, February 14 in Albany. PEF will participate in the Caucus weekend by sponsoring a booth at the Career and Business Expo. PEF will not sponsor a reception this year, due to recent changes in the ethics law.

PEF has purchased 35 tickets to the Labor Luncheon held Saturday, February 13 from 12 to 2:30 p.m. Tickets will be given on a first-come, first-served basis.

There will be a banquet Sunday, February 14 and tickets are available for purchase by a PEF division or individual member. The cost is $175. After the block of tickets are sold through PEF, those interested in attending can still purchase them directly from the Black and Puerto Rican Association by calling (518) 427-8363.

Contact Kim Partridge at PEF Headquarters by Friday, February 5 for tickets or more information.

PEF holds firm on no givebacks

Gov. David Paterson’s Executive Budget proposal for 2010-11 asks for $250 million in negotiated savings from the state work force through such options as a pay lag, or delay or deferral of the 4 percent general salary increase scheduled for April 1, which is in the final year of the current PS&T contract.

PEF President Ken Brynien said PEF is willing to listen and discuss proposals with the governor, but cannot and will not reopen the contract which was negotiated in good faith. And the governor cannot legally implement his proposed cuts without negotiating with PEF and the other state employee unions.

PEF will be reviewing the proposed budget in detail during the next few weeks, and will keep members updated to its findings.
