Black and Puerto Rican legislators hold annual conference

The New York State Association of Black and Puerto Rican Legislators is getting ready for its 41st annual conference held February 17-19 in Albany. This year’s theme is “Get Healthy, Get Involved, Get Empowered.”

This annual statewide event allows the association to raise scholarship funds for the educational advancement of African-American, Hispanic and other minority youth. On Saturday, February 18, in the North Concourse of the Empire State Plaza, there will be an exhibit fair from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Those who plan on attending should stop by and visit the PEF booth.

NYS Association of Black and Puerto Rican Legislators plan 40th Annual Conference

PEF will be participating in the state’s Association of Black and Puerto Rican Legislators 40th annual conference Friday, February 18 through Sunday February 20. PEF will sponsor a booth at the Career and Business Expo at the Empire State Plaza in Albany.

The PEF Black Caucus will hold its annual dinner Friday, February 18 at the Hilton Garden Inn on New Scotland Avenue in Albany from 7:30 to 11 p.m. Black Caucus members and a guest are invited to attend. For more information, call Elizabeth Cheese at 1-718-704-6890.

NYS Association of Black and Puerto Rican Legislators plan 40th Annual Conference

PEF will be participating in the state’s Association of Black and Puerto Rican Legislators 40th annual conference Friday, February 18 through Sunday February 20. PEF will sponsor a booth at the Career and Business Expo at the Empire State Plaza in Albany.

PEF has purchased a block of tickets to the Sunday night banquet, which are available for purchase by divisions or individual members at the cost of $175 each. These tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Once the tickets are sold out, members can purchase tickets directly from the Black and Puerto Rican Association by calling (518) 427-8363.

PEF also has purchased 35 tickets to the Labor Luncheon, Saturday, February 19 from 12 noon to 2:30 p.m. at the Hart Lounge. If you are interested in attending, contact Kim Partridge at (518) 785-1900 ext. 235 for a registration form. The form must be completed and returned by Friday, February 11.

PEF testifies at Assembly and Senate committees

PEF President Ken Brynien will testify Wednesday, February 10 at an Assembly Ways and Means Committee and Senate Finance Committee in Albany on state work force issues. 

Brynien will testify on the impact the governor’s budget proposal will have on state services and state employees. He will also offer alternatives to the governor’s proposal to cut $250 million from salary and benefits from state employees. PEF’s plan identifies several options that will pay for the cost of the employee salary givebacks the governor is demanding and the other restorations PEF is seeking.

Black and Puerto Rican Legislative Conference runs this weekend

The 39th Annual Black and Puerto Rican Legislative Conference will be held Friday, February 12 through Sunday, February 14 in Albany. PEF will participate in the Caucus weekend by sponsoring a booth at the Career and Business Expo. PEF will not sponsor a reception this year, due to recent changes in the ethics law.

The Labor Luncheon  will be held Saturday, February 13 from 2 to 4 p.m. and there will be a banquet Sunday, February 14. Those interested in attending can still purchase tickets directly from the Black and Puerto Rican Association by calling (518) 427-8363.

PEF closes for President’s Day

PEF offices will be closed Monday, February 15 in observance of President’s Day. Offices will reopen Tuesday, February 16.
