New stewards and those wanting a refresher course can sign up for an all-day training class which will be held Tuesday, December 3 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at PEF Headquarters in Latham. Topics covered will include the role of a steward, the PS&T contract, health and safety issues, understanding the grievance procedure and organizing.
A number of holiday parties and food drives are a tradition within PEF, and most benefit the community. At PEF headquarters, the 29th Annual Holiday Hunger Appeal is taking place. Members are asked to bring in a nonperishable food item, donate money, or volunteer at the regional food bank kiosk. Volunteers are needed at Crossgates Mall Saturday, December 14.
Two events are being held that will benefit Toys for Tots. The PEF Region 8 seasonal party is Friday, December 6 at the Colonie Elks Club from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Admission is $10 and a new unwrapped toy. The toys will also be distributed to St. Margaret’s Hospital for Children and the PEF parolee holiday project.

The PEF Black Caucus will also host a holiday party Friday, December 13 at Maggie’s Restaurant in Albany from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The cost is $10 and a toy, which will be donated to a local charity. For more information and to RSVP, call Greg McBride at (518) 788-4291.
In observance of the Thanksgiving holiday, PEF offices will close at 1 p.m. Wednesday, November 27 and will reopen for business Friday, November 29. PEF leaders and staff wish all members and their families a safe and enjoyable holiday.
PEF President Susan Kent and other leaders of PEF from the Binghamton area will attend a press conference Monday, November 18 held by state Senator Thomas Libous. The senator is expected to make a major announcement about the proposed closures of the Greater Binghamton Health Center and the Broome Developmental Center.
PEF's Executive Board met in Saratoga Springs late last week and discussed the Save Our Services Campaign, a statewide effort to keep state jobs and services in communities that need them. The board also discussed a rally planned for January 29 in Albany, PEF's legislative priorities and other business.
