PEF nurses to participate in rally, pressure lawmakers for safer working conditions

PEF nurses will unite with other union-represented nurses from the New York State Nurses Association, the 1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers East and the Communication Workers of America on Tuesday, May 21 in Albany for a rally and to lobby state legislators.

 

Thousands of nurses are expected to attend the rally which takes place at 11:30 a.m. at West Capitol Park.

 

The four unions have formed the New York Healthcare Workers Coalition to advocate for patients with a unified voice. It is working to enact two important bills this year that will improve the quality of care throughout the state. The bills are the Safe Staffing for Quality Care Act, and the Safe Patient Handling Act.

Workers Unite Film Festival celebrates global labor solidarity

The second annual Workers Unite Film Festival is taking place in New York City through Friday, May 17. The festival is part of a Global Labor Film Festival and screening are taking place at several locations in Manhattan, including the historic Cinema Village near Union Square, and The Brecht Forum on West Street. Interested in a Disney trip? Visit PEF May 8 for a great night of fun and information

If you ever wanted to go to Disney World, or would like more information about this magical kingdom, PEF Travel has a special night for you. On Wednesday, May 8, a Disney representative will describe what’s new and exciting at Disney World. Registration begins at 6 p.m. and the presentation follows at 6:30 p.m. The event includes light refreshments, door prizes, and if you book a vacation, free parking at Albany Park, Ride & Fly.

Workers’ Memorial Day – An International Day of Remembrance

Workers’ Memorial Day, April 28, is now an international day of remembrance for workers killed in incidents at the job, or by diseases caused by their work.

 

Throughout New York, PEF members gather to honor co-workers and others whose lives have been lost. On Monday, April 29, PEF leaders will hold a wreath-laying ceremony in Latham at 10 a.m. with PEF President Susan Kent officiating. Kent will also participate in another service at the state Department of Labor in Albany at 12 noon.
