PEF strengthens “Go Public” campaign with new research at press conference

This is the PEF Information Line for the week of Monday May 5, 2008.

In the face of the governor’s call for cuts to state operations, PEF will hold a press conference on Thursday, May 8 at the Legislative Office Building in Albany at 10:30 a.m. to release new research to support the “Go Public” campaign and detail the millions of dollars the state can save by replacing private contractors with state employees.

Payment dates for raises expected in late June
Since the PS&T contract has been ratified, PEF members should expect to see the retroactive pay and other increases starting in late June. Specific information will be available after the pay bill is introduced into the Legislature and processed by the Office of the State Comptroller. The dates will be announced as soon as they are known.

The current status is the draft pay bill is out of the state Department of Budget and is now being reviewed by the governor's counsel's office and PEF. State representatives do not expect significant changes to be made at the governor's counsel's office. This is the last step before introduction into the Legislature.

Join the Nurses Rally to create a better health care system in NY
PEF hopes to push two bills through the Legislature this year - the “stop mandatory overtime” bill and another to create safe staffing levels in health care facilities. PEF leaders are asking nurses and other PEF members to support a rally to persuade our lawmakers to pass these bills and create a better health care system in New York, as other states have done.

The rally will be held at the State Capital on Tuesday, June 10 and will start at 11:15 a.m. It will include PEF, and other union members from the New York State United Teachers, the Communication Workers of America, and the Service Employees International Union 1199.

For more information, call the PEF nurse organizer at 1-800-342-4306 ext. 344.

That’s all the news for this week. You may leave a message after the tone.
