Previous Press Release:

Albany participants sought for American Cancer Society study

A large-scale cancer study is hoping to enroll PEF/CSEA members, other state workers and the Albany community at-large at a two-day enrollment event in the Capital Region at the Empire State Convention Center May 2 and 3, 2012.

The American Cancer Society's Cancer Prevention Study, or CPS-3, will attempt to better understand the factors that cause or prevent cancer. The study's ultimate goal is to eliminate cancer as a major health concern for future generations.

The study is currently focusing on enrollment with a goal to enroll 300,000 adults from various racial/ethnic backgrounds from across the U.S.

Participants will be followed for 20 to 30 years.

You are eligible to become a CPS-3 study participant if you:

  • are between the ages of 30 and 65
  • have never been diagnosed with cancer (excluding basal or squamous cell skin cancer)
  • are willing to commit to the study long term.

Beginning in March, those interested in enrolling at the Albany event are encouraged to visit the following ACS website at: www.cps3albany.org

From the site you will select an appointment time and fill out a comprehensive baseline survey online. On the day of the enrollment, participants will complete a very short survey, have their waist circumference measured, and will provide a small blood sample (7 teaspoons).

The blood sample will be drawn by a trained, certified phlebotomist. (the samples are stored). Following the enrollment, an individual¹s participation involves completing surveys sent to their home every two to three years.

PEF and CSEA will have an information table on March 28th at 10:00am to 2:00pm at the Empire State Plaza Concourse (next to McDonalds) for more information on enrollment in the American Cancer Society CPS-3, which begins May 2-3.
