Important News About Zyrtec
The Department of Civil Service has posted the following information on their web site: As of January 24, 2008, Zyrtec and Zyrtec-D (generic name cetirizine) are available over the counter without a prescription. Generic cetirizine is also available over the counter in various strengths and forms. Effective January 25, 2008, Zyrtec and Zyrtec-D are no longer covered drugs under The Empire Plan.
The FDA announcement that Zyrtec has been approved for non-prescription use in adults and children is posted at http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/NEWS/2007/NEW01750.html.
If you are in the Empire Plan and want to continue using this drug, the less expensive option is the generic cetirizine. Remember that if you are enrolled in the Health Care Spending Account, over-the-counter drugs are eligible for reimbursement.
