AFT has launched a national class action lawsuit against the for-profit federal student loan servicer Navient

Urgent News for PEF Members: One of PEF’s parent unions, the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), has launched a national class action lawsuit against the for-profit federal student loan servicer Navient. We believe there are PEF members who have asked Navient about public service loan forgiveness (PSLF)and may have been given bad information. AFT is looking to identify PEF  members who may have been adversely impacted to join their lawsuit.

Please take a moment to read the message below and complete a short survey if you think this applies to you:

A few months ago, AFT K-12 and higher education members from across the country filed a class-action lawsuit against the for-profit federal student loan servicer Navient. The complaint alleges that in order to increase the company’s profits, Navient misled people about their options when it came to enrolling in the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program.

We need your help to show how widespread this problem is. Do you currently have Navient as your loan servicer? If yes, please take this short survey.https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/AFTstudentdebt

We believe all public sector workers—like many of the 1.7 million AFT members who are school staff, public employees and healthcare workers—are paying millions of dollars more toward their student loans than if they had gotten accurate information from Navient. Instead of helping borrowers, Navient spends as little time as possible on the phone with them. Navient staff were financially incentivized to keep calls with borrowers short—under seven minutes. This has led to thousands of public servants being steered into the wrong repayment plans and/or away from applying for PSLF.

Nearly all AFT members would qualify for Public Service Loan Forgiveness, but we are particularly concerned that the student loan servicer Navient may be giving AFT members misleading information about eligibility for programs that could reduce or eliminate their student loan payments, including income-driven repayment plans and the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program.

Have you called Navient about public service loan forgiveness? If so, please take this short survey and we may contact you. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/AFTstudentdebt

Specifically, we are looking for AFT healthcare, public employee, and school and college support staff members who may represent us as plaintiffs in a class-action lawsuit against Navient.

We believe it is time for Navient to stop putting profits over the livelihoods of public employees!
