PEF honors Scacalossi Scholarship winners

PEF Region 8 Coordinator Mike Blue presented Samantha Hesler, one of three PEF Region 8 scholarship winners, with a certificate August 11 at PEF Headquarters in Latham. Samantha’s mom is Susan Hesler, a senior insurance examiner at the state Department of Financial Services. PEF President Wayne Spence and the council leader at DSF, Bill Denn, also congratulated Samantha on her achievements.

Blue recognized the other two Scacalossi Scholarship winners from his region, Kristin Connolly and Mark Brenner, who were unable to attend. Blue noted their academic achievements, community service work and personal interests. Their parents, John Connolly and James Brenner, are from the state Office of Taxation and Finance.

The PEF Scholarship Committee selects 10 students annually, and each student receives $1,000 a year for four years. The 2015 scholarship attracted approximately 350 student applications.

The other winners are: Richard Adamovich-Zeitlin (Region 9); Gabillis Castillo (Region 10); Ryan DiPasquale (Region 1); Harrison Forte (Region 12); Angelina Lorence (Region 12); Victoria Towndrow (Region 4); and, Elisabeth Wolff (Region 6).

The scholarship is named after Joseph Scacalossi, a highly-respected union man at the state Department of Labor in New York City who fought hard for his members. He was an activist until his death in 1988.
