May Day commemorates the struggle of the working class in America to gain an 8 hour workday. Working conditions in the 1800’s were deplorable- young and old worked 10-16 hour days with little compensation. Because 300,000 workers united in a strike on May 1st 1886 the quest for a decent work life was fulfilled.
Today, we continue the fight for workers everywhere. We know that labor’s past victories have always come from struggle – and we pledge to building a bright future for working families, no matter how hard the struggle is.
PEF is proud to be part of this great coalition, together fighting the battles that will shape labors future.
We will not be bullied, we will not be silent. We are united in our cause-fair work and fair pay for all New Yorkers.
